An elderly lady, who celebrated her 100th birthday recently, received the sweetest surprise from a peculiar friend: the garbage collector.
This video, which has been going viral around the internet, has been melting people’s hearts for the past few days. In it, we see garbage collector Ben Bird, walking up a garden path, laden with a white and pink birthday cake for a special lady, Dorothy Ballard, also known as Mercy to her family and friends and loved ones. The special occasion was that she had turned to be 100 years old that day.
Ben had been allocated to collect Mercy’s garbage for the past 8 years, and over the years, the duo had developed a very unlikely friendship. Every Thursday, at the time when Ben visits, the pair chat around for roughly 10 minutes, from around 8 to 8.10, and through their conversations, they have been talking about everything from technology to family.
Ben had even promised Mercy that he would walk up to her door, cake in hand if she turned to reach 100. As it turned out, Mercy was able to keep her end of the bargain, and Ben, including 2 of his friends, got a cake and surprised Mercy and celebrated the special day with her.

This viral phenomenon has been taking the internet by storm from the time when Katy Smith, Mercy’s second oldest granddaughter had shared it. In this video, Ben walks up Mercy’s garden path, cake in hand, and waits patiently by the door. When Mercy finally opens the door, all 3 men start singing her a happy birthday, and the centurion is seen burying her face in her hands, as she is genuinely surprised, and touched.
She goes on to blow out the candles, and on suggestion by Ben, makes a wish to live to be 105. Young Katy is truly thankful that her grandmother has such kind friends and neighbours like Ben, who take time off their busy schedules to make her feel special and happy.
