A steaming cup of coffee is just the kind of pickup you need to fight the drowsiness in the morning if you stay up at night and get up early to go to work. However, if you have a cup of coffee in the afternoon, it can make you restless and tense, and affect your sleeping pattern.

But alas, one has to stay alert and awake at work. The solution is simple. A nap! Through research is done, is has been found out that a short nap during the day will help people boost their alertness even better than a good long sleep.

A study done in 2015 has found that short naps during the day strengthen the immune system by reversing the effects of sleep deprivation. A short nap doesn’t have any side effects, but are very refreshing. It will not interfere with your night sleep either.

The Nature Neuroscience journal published a study in which researchers had tested subjects on their perceptual performance 4 times a day. The performance had deteriorated with each test. Participants who had taken a 30-minute nap between tests had stopped the deterioration in the performance, and those who had taken a 1-hour nap had even reversed it.

A co-author of the study Sara Mednick, and associate professor of psychology at the University of California, Riverside, states that naps have the same benefits of a full night’s sleep, if they had a specific quality of nap. Also, different types of naps offer specific benefits.

Though it is not suitable to nap in front of your colleagues and bosses in the office, it can be very uncomfortable to nap in the chair with your head on the desk.

A Greek designer, Nancy Leivaditou, of Studio NL, has found an ingenious solution – a multipurpose desk which morphs into a bed on activation. Known as 1.5 S.M. of Life Desk, it is 2 meters long and 0.8 meters wide.

The upper layer of this bed is a sturdy piece of lacquered wood, with a mattress hinged up on one side. The 2 ends of the bead are boarded up by plywood, which can be reclined. You only have to slide the top board backward from sitting position, and then push back the mattress, and voila, you are ready for a nap.

If you only require a small break, and not a nap, this has a built-in TV as well, and is also excellent for your home, and is expected to be available for retail soon. Make sure that you always set the alarm before taking a nap, so that you won’t take a nap longer than planned, since it is so comfortable.
