A 65-year-old inventor from Gesvres, France, Christian Poincheval has become a household name in many countries around the world with one of his incredible creations. What is this genius idea you may ask? Well, it’s a pill that makes your gas smell nice. These pills are very affordable, a pack of 60 pills which costs about $23, can be purchased online via Poincheval’s website pilulepet.com.
There is a selection of a variety of different scents that you can choose from, ranging from chocolate to ginger, and to flowers, herbs, and spices. The inventor has even created fart reducing powder for pets. In an interview with the Telegraph, Poincheval explains that he came up with this idea back in 2006 when he was out for a meal with friends. As can be expected, after the meal, the entire team has had a gas attack, which had then led to a most embarrassing situation. He goes on to explain: “Our farts were so smelly after the copious meal, we nearly suffocated. The people at the table next to us were not happy. Something had to be done.”
Poincheval has subsequently thought about overcoming this predicament, and come across this somewhat obvious answer. He says: “When we were vegetarian we noticed that our gas smelt like vegetables, like the odor from a cow pat, but when we started eating meat, the smell of the flatulence became much disagreeable. We needed to invent something that made them smell nicer.” The inventor goes on to say that along with saving people from embarrassment, the pills are healthy as well, as it includes ingredients such as vegetable coal, fennel, seaweed, plant resin, bilberry as well as cacao zest, which reduces intestinal gas and bloating.
The inventor goes on to say that although these pills are very useful, these are often given as joke gifts during the holidays. He also says that “I have all sorts of customers. Some buy them because they have problems with flatulence and some buy them as a joke to send to their friends. Christmas always sees a surge in sales.” Poncheval’s website on the pill goes on to say: “The Fart Pill is the result of lengthy research and trials and is on sale since 2007. Our fragrant variants also add a touch of humor for any occasion. Our numerous returning customers are no doubt the best proof.”
A blogger, who writes for Buzzfeed, had tried these pills and found them to cause discomfort in her stomach, constipation, and other small, temporary digestive problems. She goes on to write that though most people have not seemed to smell anything, a few had noted that they smelled like roses. The writer goes on to say that: “If my criteria for success were whether or not the pills made my farts smell like violets, then they failed. But because there was no smell, I had no way of determining whether or not the pills were responsible or if it was a placebo effect. Maybe my mind was tricking my body into passing less stinky gas!” She also goes on to add saying: “If there were a fancy occasion that I didn’t want to ruin with malodorous gases, I would take these pills because there isn’t any harm in taking them. But the need to take 6 pills after every meal definitely deters me from taking this regularly. Also, you shouldn’t ingest activated charcoal for more than 10 days.”
